Anatomy of a Paddle

What the specs actually mean.

Five things change how a paddle plays. Learn these and you’ll never buy blind again.

01

Surface — carbon, fiberglass or hybrid

Raw T700 carbon faces grab the ball for spin and control. Fiberglass flexes for more raw pop. Most modern paddles are carbon.

02

Core thickness — 14mm vs 16mm

16mm = softer, more control and forgiveness. 14mm = firmer, more power and a quicker pop. The single biggest feel decision.

03

Shape — standard, elongated or wide-body

Elongated adds reach and leverage (power, spin) but shrinks the sweet spot. Wide-body is forgiving. Standard splits the difference.

04

Weight — 7.6 to 8.5 oz

Lighter is faster at the net and easier on the arm. Heavier delivers more plow-through power. Most players land near 8.0 oz.

05

Grip size — 4.0″ to 4.5″

Smaller grips help wrist spin; larger grips add stability. When in doubt, size down — you can always build up with overgrips.
